FINDING “TRUE NORTH”

[RESPONSE TO A FRIEND WHO NOTES THE OBSEQUIOUS CONFORMITY OF MANY AMERICANS TO OBAMA HAS ANALOGUES TO GERMANY IN THE 1930S]

Joe,

I don’t doubt the point you make. A key theme of INTO THE NIGHT – The Crisis of Western Civilization was the pattern of conformity which characterizes people that ultimately come under authoritarian rule or who commit inhuman and unjust acts.

Contrary to what people assume, this is rarely IMPOSED on people initially in the arbitrary, power grabbing sense.  They first accept, embrace, and even support these forces – ultimately to their shock.

To do what I believe Christians must do in our society at this time in history, one has to disavow conformity to man’s institutions, organizations, plans, and ideas which may in any way be in conflict with the teachings of Christ.  The Christian must also relinquish any hope of being accepted, much less complimented or praised.

I believe that ultimately this is what God expects of ALL Christians, but in this time and place in history the absolute imperative of that form of faith and belief looms in front of us, like an Everest we must climb.

My studies in writing Into the Night revealed the recurring pattern – people get into trouble when they conform.

They get into trouble also when they rebel for rebellion’s sake.

I just completed a study of the German Field Marshals, Generals, and Admirals who served in WWII.  Some of them were professing Christians – and I believe they sincerely believed this.  But SINCERITY IS NOT THE ISSUE!

Sincerity will fly the plane into the ground.  Sincerity will get you killed, physically, intellectually and spiritually.

As I read their lives this pattern of conformity was evident throughout, but the central, omnipresent feature of all of them – those who later opposed Hitler as well as those who served him loyally – was the absence of an INTERNAL COMPASS THAT POINTS TRUE NORTH.

It is always and ONLY when human beings have chosen the “compass” of complete and absolute surrender (nothing, absolutely nothing, held back or compartmentalized) to God that they suddenly acquire the ability to find TRUE NORTH.

Even “good Americans”, professing Christian Americans, very traditional and conservative Christians, do not GET IT.

Much of what we hear touted (e.g., Republicanism, conservatism, libertarianism, and many, many churches, etc.) is just ideology – a belief system – though many believe it is “Christian” in one sense or another. They are sincere!

Yes, it is sometimes influenced heavily by Christianity, but it is not Christianity.

True surrender is the ONLY WAY. This is the ultimate nonconformity to the world and all that is in it.
